Despite its dry climate, The Atacama Desert, embrace a diverse and rich eco system, which remains due to indigenous community who fights for and protect the area from exploitative, water-intensive extraction and mining. Around the world lithium has been called “the white gold”, and praised as a positive energy source for batteries in our iphones, electric cars ect. Whereas the mining of lithium salt requires huge water resources, that leaves a negative impact on the local environment that already has a scarcity on water supply.
I was captivated by this complexity. Coming to desert, I as many others experienced a spiritual awakening. With my cell phone in my hand, I questioned my material desires and whether they can coexist with my desire for self-discovery in nature? More than anything “Oro Blanco” is an invitation to an individual examination of ones own values, beliefs, and actions..
The video shows movement research from the Atacama Desert accompaniet by music of Benjamin Gibert. Filmed by Solene Kerlo
